About my work

I create wheel-thrown, functional forms in short runs using 100% NZ clay (unless otherwise noted) and local materials (wherever possible), and I fire using sustainable techniques - either in my electric kiln or in the wood kilns at the Quarry Arts Centre

My glazes are developed using raw materials, tested and retested, and I’m currently exploring the histories and geology of Whangārei Heads to see if it is appropriate and viable for me to create using local clay and rock.

Making pottery, for me, is an act of stillness, a meditation, a way to explore and interpret, and a way of listening.  My hope is that these pieces add to your stillness - your rituals.

I’m interested in how inseparable we are from our world, that the very ground we stand on and that I create with, has the same building blocks as our bodies, that we share the same ancestry.

Through my practice, exploring how to bring these materials and this environment to the fore, I grow my own understanding of our world and how to live with and within it.

About me

I was born and raised in Whangārei and have recently returned after many years in other parts of Aotearoa and the world. I’ve been a professional artist and producer since the early 1990’s - training first in printmaking and theatre and more recently working in arts development and ceramics.

I’ve built my ceramics skills through trial and error, masterclasses with leading potters, applied glaze research through Otago Polytechnic and by tapping into the great and generous local, national and international potter communities.

My home and studio are in Parua Bay, nestled amongst regenerating bush and a permaculture-based garden.
